The Journal of Interactive Narrative Research advances the understanding, design, and application of interactive narratives. The journal is predicated on the interdisciplinary nature of interactive narratives. It is a home for research and practical work that intersects traditional academic disciplines and artistic forms. In addition, the journal is focused on the development of novel, interactive formats to overcome existing limitations in the representation of interactive scholarship – see here for more on this topic
The journal is dedicated to supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion. This means reducing inequalities and closing inclusion gaps in the global community. As the journal of the ARDIN (Association for Research in Digital Interactive Narrative), we embody the same values and aim to achieve gender balance, the inclusion of early career scholars in our editorial board, and a scope that includes voices outside of Europe and North America.
Call for Special Topic Issue:
For the second issue, the journal calls for articles, interactive narrative works, and video essays on interactive narrative work with a focus on:
Trust/Public Communication/Decision Making
We are looking for contributions that discuss using interactive narratives to create trust, further public communication, and aid in decision-making processes.
Such contributions can include, for example, the use of interactive narratives in health communications as tools for self-guided decision-making to improve sustainability or combat dis/misinformation. We are especially interested in works combining these topics with Generative AI or Web-based XR.
In general, contributions can cover any of the following areas as long as they are connected to the above topic:
- Interactive Narrative Design
- Social and Cultural Contexts
- Theory, History, and Foundations
- Tools and Systems
- Virtual Worlds, Performance, Games, and Play
- Applications and Case Studies
Kinds of Submissions
We accept traditional scholarly articles but are particularly interested in articles that include interactive works and elements. We also accept interactive forms of scholarly and artistic reflection.
Articles should be no longer than 8000 words, and use APA version 7 for references.
